A woman clinging to life after being run over and stabbed by her estranged husband is the host of a podcast aimed at helping domestic violence survivors.
Sophia Giraldo is still in intensive care after the violent Tuesday attack that took place in Queens, New York. Police say Stephen Giraldo loaded the couple’s three children, aged 11, 9, and 6, into his white Ford Explorer that was parked near Parsons Boulevard and Sanford Avenue in Flushing. At around 5:20 a.m., he was captured on surveillance video plowing down Sophia outside her home after demanding the children keep their seatbelts on. After hitting his wife, the SUV flipped on its side. At that point, he relentlessly escaped from the window with a knife and stabbed Sophia repeatedly. The children were not injured, and Stephen was arrested at the scene.
The 41-year-old woman is a domestic violence life coach and hosts a podcast called “Unfiltered and Free,” where she shares her experience being in a toxic marriage. Sophia shared that she wanted to enter 2023 with a new mindset in the most recent episode, which was recorded shortly before she was brutally assaulted. Sadly, she has been left in critical condition at New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital. Assistant District Attorney Audra Beerman has confirmed that if Sophia does survive her injuries, she may be severely “neurologically incapacitated.”
Stephen has now been charged with attempted murder, assault, weapons possession, reckless endangerment, and endangering the welfare of a child. He faces up to 25 years in prison, though that is all dependent upon whether or not Sophia lives. His attorney Mary Beth Anderson says he is currently on suicide watch.
