A Chinese zoo is denying speculations that its bears are humans dressed in costumes.
A viral video of a Malayan sun bear standing on its hind legs at an eastern Chinese zoo has sparked speculation after going viral online over the weekend. The zoo responded to the allegations and clarified that the bear is a real bear, but not the type commonly seen in the wild.
Hangzhou Zoo conveyed a message on its social media pages Sunday from the perspective of a bear, stating, “There are individuals who perceive me as standing like a human, but it appears that you don’t comprehend me very well.”
“Previously, some tourists thought that I was too tiny to be a bear. I have to emphasize again: I am a Malayan sun bear! Not a black bear! Not a dog! A sun bear!”
While many people online are not buying the zoo’s explanation, NBC News spoke with wildlife biologist Wong Siew Te who confirmed the animal in the video is “a sun bear for sure.”
