Ray J turned a late night Instagram conversation with Bow Wow into a profanity filled spectacle Thursday, repeatedly going after the rapper while also suggesting parts of the heated exchange were meant as jokes.

The Ray J rant unfolded Thursday night, September 3, as Bow Wow joined a conversation Ray J was having online. What started as an acknowledgment of Bow Wow’s arrival quickly escalated into Ray J throwing a string of insults at his longtime friend.“Yo, guess who stepped in the chat? Bow Wow has now stepped into the chat,” Ray J said early in the video. “And Bow Wow’s a b***h. Bow Wow’s a h**.”
The conversation shifted toward a previous night at a strip club. Ray J claimed Bow Wow became “jealous” because Ray J was “trying to look out for his h**.” Ray J continued calling Bow Wow a “b***h” before telling him to “shut your f**king mouth” as Bow Wow attempted to respond.
Bow Wow appeared surprised by the intensity of the comments.
“Ray, that’s how you feel about your little brother?” Bow Wow asked during the exchange. “Damn.”
Even while continuing the insults, Ray J acknowledged having “love” for Bow Wow. He still described Bow Wow during the rant as “a real h**” and a “little bitch-a** n***a.”
That combination of affection and disrespect is important considering the pair’s public history.
An archived episode of “The Breakfast Club” documents Ray J and Bow Wow appearing together for a lengthy joint interview in 2021, where they discussed their experiences traveling, partying, and working around each other. Years later, their relationship still appeared close.
In April 2025, Hot 97 reported that Ray J and Chris Brown helped celebrate the birthday of Bow Wow’s daughter, Shai Moss, backstage during the Millennium Tour. Bow Wow referred to both men as her uncles while sharing the moment on Instagram, another indication that Ray J has been treated as part of Bow Wow’s extended circle rather than simply an industry acquaintance.
Still, Thursday’s Ray J rant was much more confrontational. Allegations involving drug use were also raised during the conversation. Bow Wow could seemingly be heard warning Ray J, “You know not to play with me,” before adding, “I love you, Ray J.”
Ray J answered with more dismissive remarks.
“Ain’t nobody listening to you,” Ray J told Bow Wow. “Shut the f**k up, bro.”
At another point, Ray J warned Bow Wow about being made “an example” of and told him, “You don’t wanna go viral.”
The public confrontation comes only weeks after Ray J generated headlines for another high-profile showdown, this time inside a boxing ring.
Ray J defeated Orlando Brown by unanimous decision in a three-round celebrity boxing match at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena on August 15. The bout took place on the undercard of Claressa Shields and Kaye Scott and aired through Zeus Network.
Ray J referenced his appetite for viral moments during the Bow Wow exchange, but there has been no indication that his latest back-and-forth with Bow Wow is headed anywhere beyond social media.
He continued the trash talk in the caption accompanying his Instagram post.
“Lil Bow Wow is hilarious! I got the whole video. He’s saying some crazy s**t! Should I release the whole video?. … [Bow Wow] is my b***h.”
With Ray J repeatedly signaling that at least some of the insults were jokes and their years of public friendship providing another layer of context, the biggest unanswered question is whether fans just witnessed a real falling out or two longtime friends taking their usual chaos further than expected.
