Rashee Rice Files for Bankruptcy With $3.45M in Debt, But Lamborghini Company’s Lawyer Says He’s Trying to Dodge a Jury Trial

The Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver's Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing has sparked fresh controversy, with an attorney representing a Lamborghini rental company questioning the timing of his legal move.

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice is facing another legal controversy, and this time, the conversation is centered on millions of dollars in debt and a bankruptcy filing that has one attorney questioning his intentions. The Rashee Rice bankruptcy case has drawn renewed attention to the NFL player’s involvement in a devastating 2024 Dallas traffic crash, with a lawyer representing a Lamborghini rental company accusing him of attempting to avoid an upcoming civil trial.

According to TMZ’s November 6 report, Rice filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection this week, listing more than $3.45 million in debt against approximately $677,000 in assets. The filing comes as legal disputes connected to the March 2024 crash continue to follow the Chiefs’ receiver.

However, Kyle Coker, an attorney representing The Classic Lifestyle, a Lamborghini rental company involved in litigation against Rice, isn’t convinced the timing is coincidental.

Coker told TMZ, “I think the only reason Rashee Rice filed for bankruptcy was to avoid the impending jury trial related to injuring others during his drag-racing escapades.”

That’s a serious accusation, although it remains the attorney’s interpretation of Rice’s decision rather than an established finding by a bankruptcy judge.

The dispute traces back to March 2024, when Rice was involved in a six-vehicle crash on a Dallas highway after racing a leased Lamborghini. The collision injured multiple people and ultimately resulted in criminal charges against the NFL player.

Rice later pleaded guilty to felony racing on a highway and felony collision causing serious bodily injury.

Beyond the criminal proceedings, the crash also generated civil litigation involving injured parties and financial claims.

TMZ reports that Rice has spent more than $2.1 million in connection with civil lawsuits stemming from the incident. However, Coker maintains that his client, The Classic Lifestyle, still hasn’t received payment for its claim following the wreck. The attorney also alleges Rice lacked insurance coverage.

The disagreement has now moved into a new legal arena, where the bankruptcy process could affect how creditors pursue money they believe they’re owed.

Coker’s criticism extends beyond the amount of money involved. He argues that Rice turned to bankruptcy protection after efforts to postpone a civil trial failed.

According to the attorney, the court declined to grant the continuance Rice sought, leaving the parties prepared to move forward with litigation.

Coker also pointed to Rice’s potential future NFL earnings, arguing that the receiver could eventually secure a significantly more lucrative contract.

Still, projected contract earnings are not guaranteed income, and the possibility of a future payday does not automatically determine whether someone qualifies for bankruptcy protection.

Coker told TMZ that he intends to appear in bankruptcy court on behalf of The Classic Lifestyle and seek dismissal of Rice’s bankruptcy case. He also plans to request sanctions over what he characterizes as an improper procedural delay.

Those requests would require judicial consideration. Filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy is a lawful process, and the filing itself does not establish wrongdoing.

Additional reporting has revealed just how complicated Rice’s finances have become.

According to the Associated Press and Bloomberg Law, Rice’s bankruptcy disclosures include $421,825 in deferred compensation. His Super Bowl LVIII championship ring, valued at $160,000, is also listed as collateral securing a claim by his attorney.

Meanwhile, court records cited by Fox News show that one crash-related settlement creditor is owed approximately $979,837.

The bankruptcy filing also includes disputed claims involving civil lawsuits filed by crash victims and a former girlfriend who accused Rice of assault. Rice has disputed the assault allegations, and the NFL did not impose discipline following its investigation.

Rice’s financial situation is unfolding at a particularly important point in his football career.

The 26-year-old receiver is approaching the end of his four-year rookie contract, valued at approximately $6.5 million. He is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2026 season, potentially positioning himself for another NFL deal.

However, a future contract remains uncertain, and his current financial obligations are already substantial.

For now, Rice faces a legal process that will determine how his assets and debts are handled. According to WFAA, a creditors’ meeting is scheduled for December 11.

The bigger question is whether the bankruptcy court will allow his Chapter 7 case to proceed if creditors challenge it.

Coker has made his position clear, but a judge will ultimately decide any objections or requests for sanctions. Rice’s bankruptcy filing does not erase the underlying criminal convictions, and whether particular civil debts can be discharged depends on bankruptcy law and further proceedings.

For a player whose career includes a Super Bowl championship and the possibility of another major NFL contract, the contrast is difficult to ignore. Rice’s future earnings could reach millions, but his current court filings describe a financial situation where reported debts dramatically outweigh his assets.

And with creditors still seeking payment, this legal fight is far from finished.
