Malayshia Alford’s Foster Mother Charged With Murder After Girl Found in Trunk

Malayshia Alford, the 10-year-old Philadelphia foster child previously identified in police reports as Jalayshia Alford, is at the center of a murder case after her foster mother, Carprice Williams, was charged with murder, endangering the welfare of a child, and additional offenses, according to details from Thursday’s district attorney news conference.

During the November 5 briefing, officials reportedly clarified that the little girl’s actual name was Malayshia, indicating that Jalayshia, the name widely circulated throughout the search, was incorrect.

The announcement followed the discovery of Malayshia’s body inside the trunk of a vehicle in Lindenwold, New Jersey, after a search that lasted more than a week.

Prosecutors also revealed that the medical examiner ruled Malayshia’s death a homicide caused by blunt force trauma.

Investigators presented new details about the child’s final known movements, including surveillance evidence that allegedly shows her body being carried out of her foster home inside a bag on October 26.

The disturbing findings have shifted the investigation from a missing child case to a homicide prosecution involving the woman entrusted with Malayshia’s care.

According to investigators, Malayshia was last confirmed alive on Thursday, October 22, when surveillance footage captured her returning home from school. She reportedly did not attend school the following day.

However, she was not reported missing until Monday, October 26.

Williams allegedly told investigators that Malayshia had left her West Philadelphia residence that morning to catch her school bus but never returned.

Investigators previously said they could not locate footage supporting that account.

Instead, prosecutors reportedly described surveillance footage from October 26 showing what investigators believe was Malayshia’s body being removed from the residence inside a bag.

The child had been living in foster care along the 500 block of North Simpson Street in West Philadelphia, where investigators spent days examining surveillance footage, interviewing residents and searching for evidence.

Philadelphia police, the FBI and the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office participated in the investigation.

While the criminal case centers on Williams, Malayshia Alford’s biological family had already been questioning the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.

Her aunt, Nyfisha Allford, previously revealed that she tried to obtain custody of her niece before the tragedy but says she was ignored after officials inspected her home.

“I’m just really torn up because she was in DHS custody, and there was a time I tried to get her. They came to my home, they looked it over, and then I was ignored,” Allford told 6abc.

The aunt’s account raises questions about how Philadelphia’s Department of Human Services handled the family’s efforts to care for Malayshia.

According to Allford, the process advanced far enough for officials to examine her home, but she never received the follow-up she expected.

Authorities have not publicly explained why the custody request did not move forward or whether any formal decision was made.

Before Malayshia’s body was discovered, Allford expressed her growing fear about the child’s whereabouts.

“For her to be missing this many days, it’s just crazy,” she said.

“We just thought she was safe; clearly, she isn’t,” Allford added.

Other relatives also disputed early suggestions that Malayshia might have been staying with her biological mother, explaining that her mother did not have custody and that the child was not with her.

Philadelphia Deputy Police Commissioner Frank Vanore previously expressed concern about investigators’ inability to establish Malayshia’s whereabouts.

“I’m very concerned. It’s been too long, and she’s very young,” Vanore said during the search.

As the investigation unfolded, detectives examined inconsistencies in accounts provided by adults connected to the child.

Meanwhile, people who knew Malayshia remembered a young girl whose life ended far too soon.

Her former teacher, Tashonna Moore, described her as sweet and kind.

“She was so sweet and kind. She didn’t do nothing to anybody,” Moore told NBC10 Philadelphia. “I literally cried all day. I was not able to focus.”

Williams now faces prosecution in connection with Malayshia’s death. The charges are allegations, and she is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

The precise timing of the fatal injuries and additional details about what happened inside the foster home have not been publicly established.

For Malayshia Alford’s family, the case also leaves unresolved questions about her foster care placement and whether relatives who wanted to care for her were given a meaningful opportunity.

Malayshia was only 10 years old.
