Regina King Promises Women Will Make Up 50 Percent Of Her Work Staff On All Future Productions

Regina King says she will make sure that 50 percent of her employers are women on her future productions.

Last night’s Golden Globe Awards were a haven for talent but also the platform where many made influential speeches and statements. One of those statements was from award-winning actress and producer Regina King. King took home a Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in “If Beale Street Could Talk.” When King took the stage she thanked director Barry Jenkins, the cast of Beale Street and her son. And in doing so, she also promised to hire more women on future projects and saluted the Times Up movement.

“So often everyone out there, they hear us on the red carpet…and they say celebrities, we’re using the time to talk about ourselves when we’re on our soap box, and using a moment to talk about the systemic things that are going on in life,” said King. “The reason why we do this is because we understand that our microphones are big and we’re speaking for everyone,” King added, “I’m going to use my platform right now to say, in the next two years, everything that I produce I am making a vow — and it’s going to be tough — to make sure that everything that I produce…is 50 percent women.”

“I challenge…anyone out there who is in a position of power — not just in our industry, in all industries— I challenge you to challenge yourself and stand with us.” In addition to Beale Street, King was nominated for her role in Netflix’s “Seven Seconds.”
