Idaho authorities say the remains of two children who have not been seen since September 2019 were found at a home in Fremont County, Idaho.
The children are Tylee, 17, and Joshua, known as JJ, 7. Their mother is Lori, and the remains were found at the property of her husband, Chad. According to authorities, investigators obtained a search warrant for the property on Tuesday. The Rexburg Police Department said in a news release that the remains were taken to the medical examiner’s office, where an autopsy and positive identification were performed.
Police said this was not the outcome they had hoped for, and that their hearts and prayers go out to the families of JJ and Tylee.
The case started when police in Rexburg were unable to make contact with JJ during a welfare check. The search for the children then stretched across Idaho, Arizona and Hawaii. Lori was arrested in Hawaii in February and returned to Idaho, where she remains in jail. She and Chad married in November 2019.
According to CNN, a criminal complaint has been filed against Lori in an Idaho court, charging her with two felony counts of desertion and nonsupport of children. Chad has been charged with destroying evidence and remains in jail on a $1 million bond. His attorney has asked the court for a lower bond. These charges are allegations, and neither person has been convicted. A public response from Lori was not included in reports at the time.
Authorities have said they are still working to piece together what happened, and many questions remain. We will keep you posted as more official information comes in.
