Remy Ma dropped a new song called “Wanna Go,” and it lands as a direct answer to Claressa Shields telling Cam Newton that Papoose was supposed to downgrade.
The entire premise of “Wanna Go” is secondhand versus new. Remy spends the record drawing a line between what she buys and what other women inherit, rapping about runway against retail, brand new against resale, and women who screenshot her pictures trying to find where she got it. She talks about the DMs asking where she got those. She talks about people shopping the clearance rack.
And that clearance line is where she puts the name in. Remy has called Claressa “Clarence” before, and on “Wanna Go” she stacks “Clarence” and “clearance” back to back until the two words blur into each other, chanting about women who shop the clearance rack.
Rewind to last week. Claressa Shields sat down with Cam Newton on “Funky Friday” while promoting her August 15 title fight against Kaye Scott at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, and the conversation got to Papoose, because it always does. Shields told Cam that the women who come for her about the relationship are not actually mad about a marriage ending. They are mad, in her telling, that he did not downgrade.
So Remy’s answer on “Wanna Go” is not subtle once you know what she is responding to. Claressa framed herself as the upgrade. Remy built a whole record around the argument that nothing about the situation is new, and that anybody wearing what somebody else wore first is not upgrading anything.The timing makes it sharper. The cease and desist story broke this week, and it is worth understanding what actually happened, because the letter is not new. Papoose’s attorney Shelley Albert sent it back on April 18 to Remy’s attorney Diane Bowman, filed in connection with the divorce case listed as Willie Shamele Mackie v. Reminisce Mackie. The letter demanded that Remy take down “W.Y.F.L.,” her April 10 freestyle, calling it a recording full of profane, insulting, and highly negative remarks meant to embarrass him publicly. His side also argued that the attacks were out of pocket because the two of them had been working toward agreements not to disparage each other.
“W.Y.F.L.” stands for “Why You [expletive] Lying,” and it went up on On The Radar in April with more than ninety thousand comments on the initial Instagram Reel. On it, Remy pushed back on Papoose’s claim from an Instagram Live last year that he wrote ninety percent of the rhymes that came out of her mouth, including her 2006 hit “Conceited.” She never took it down. She has been performing it, including at Angie Martinez’s BBQ, where fans believe she said Papoose’s name outright.
So the picture now is a rapper who got a legal letter asking her to remove one song, kept performing that song, and then released another one.
For the people just catching up, the background runs like this. Remy and Papoose were together more than a decade and share a daughter, Reminisce Mackenzie, born in December 2018. Things fell apart publicly in 2024 amid cheating accusations on both sides. Papoose filed for divorce in May 2025. He and Shields went public, and she announced their engagement that November. Shields has said she met Papoose on July 6, 2024, and has used that date to argue there was no happy home left to break up.
The one thing “Wanna Go” makes clear is that the cease and desist did not do what it was supposed to do. Remy did not pull a record. She released another.
