Rep. Clay Higgins Under Fire for Offensive Remarks About Haitians in Deleted Social Media Post

House Democrats are demanding accountability for GOP Rep. Clay Higgins of Louisiana after he posted a since-deleted message on social media that many found offensive and inflammatory. In the post, Higgins made disparaging remarks about Haitians and threatened those he referred to as “thugs” to leave the country before January 20th. The backlash was swift, with Democratic leaders calling for an investigation and censure of the congressman.

The controversial post read: “Lol. These Haitians are wild. Eating pets, vudu, nastiest country in the western hemisphere, cults, slapstick gangsters… but damned if they don’t feel all sophisticated now, filing charges against our President and VP. All these thugs better get their mind right and their ass out of our country before January 20th.”

The comments were met with immediate outrage, particularly from the Congressional Black Caucus. Democratic Rep. Steven Horsford of Nevada, who serves as the chairman of the Caucus, urged the House Committee on Ethics to launch an investigation into Higgins’s post. Horsford also pushed for a formal censure, which would serve as a significant rebuke to the Louisiana representative.

Despite the mounting criticism, Higgins remained defiant, standing by his words even after taking down the post. In an interview with CNN, he stated, “It’s all true. I can put up another controversial post tomorrow if you want me to. I mean, we do have freedom of speech. I’ll say what I want.” Higgins further dismissed the backlash, saying, “It’s not a big deal to me. It’s like something stuck to the bottom of my boot. Just scrape it off and move on with my life.”

Higgins’s unapologetic stance contrasts sharply with House Speaker Mike Johnson’s comments on the matter. Johnson suggested that Higgins regretted the post after praying on it and ultimately deciding to delete it. “He was approached on the floor by colleagues who said that was offensive,” Johnson explained on Wednesday. “He went to the back, and he prayed about it and he regretted it, and he pulled the post down.” Johnson added that the situation should be seen as an opportunity for redemption, emphasizing the importance of moving forward.

However, Higgins’s continued defense of his comments has only fueled calls for disciplinary action. Many lawmakers argue that his remarks are not just offensive but dangerous, given the current political climate and ongoing discussions about immigration and race in the United States.

Rep. Clay Higgins, known for his hardline conservative stance, represents Louisiana’s 3rd District and is a prominent member of the House Freedom Caucus. He has a background in law enforcement and the military, serving as an Army veteran and a law enforcement officer before entering politics. Higgins holds key positions in Congress, including roles on the House Homeland Security Committee, where he serves as Chairman of the Border Security and Enforcement Subcommittee, and the House Oversight and Accountability Committee.

As a senior member of Congress, Higgins has often been vocal about his views on border security and immigration. However, his latest remarks have sparked a debate about the limits of free speech and the responsibilities of elected officials to maintain decorum and respect in public discourse.

The House Committee on Ethics has yet to announce any formal investigation into the matter. Still, the pressure from Democratic lawmakers suggests that this issue is far from resolved. As the debate over Higgins’s comments continues, all eyes are on how Congress will address this latest controversy.
