A retired Chicago Fire Department lieutenant was shot and killed outside a popcorn shop in the Morgan Park neighborhood of Chicago on December 3, and police say two young males are now charged in the case.
The victim, Dwain, was 65 and had retired from the fire department about two years earlier, Chicago Fire Media said in a statement at the time. According to police and People, Dwain was walking to his own vehicle when a car pulled up and several people got out. Surveillance video released by police shows the group rushing toward him. Police said Dwain returned fire, and he was struck in the abdomen. He was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead.
Chicago police announced that they arrested a 15 year old, whose name is being withheld because of his age, and an 18 year old from Gary, Indiana. Both were charged with first degree murder, among other counts. Police said the 18 year old was taken into custody by the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force and also faces charges including aggravated attempted vehicular hijacking with a firearm and weapons possession. Both are considered innocent until proven guilty in court.
Police believe the shooting came during a failed attempt to steal Dwain’s vehicle. Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan told CBS 2 that evidence recovered from a stolen car found near Tinley Park helped investigators obtain the arrest warrants.
The Chicago Fire Department community shared its sadness about his death. “Our hearts are heavy tonight,” Chicago Fire Media wrote.
