Rihanna Has Around 170 Songs In The Vault But Fans May Never Get To Hear Them

Rihanna just revealed the staggering size of her unreleased music vault, but her own comments about R9, retirement, and artistic evolution suggest many of those songs may stay locked away forever.

Rihanna may have enough unreleased music to keep the Navy fed for years, but having songs in the vault and actually releasing them are two very different things. During a recent Fenty Beauty TikTok Live appearance, the singer offered one of her clearest hints yet about just how much music she has recorded during her decade away from releasing studio albums. Rihanna was discussing Fenty Beauty’s Gloss Bomb Vault when the conversation turned to her own collection of unreleased records.

“If there are 10 products [in the Gloss Bomb Vault] then I have at least 17 Vaults,” Rihanna said.

If Rihanna’s comparison is taken literally, that would suggest she has roughly 170 Rihanna unreleased songs sitting somewhere in her archive. The wording matters, though. Rihanna did not confirm that exactly 170 completed songs are ready for release. Instead, she jokingly compared her music archive to a beauty product vault.

That number also helps explain one of the biggest mysteries surrounding Rihanna’s music career. Her last studio album, “ANTI,” arrived in January 2016, meaning 2026 marks a full decade without another Rihanna album. In a 2025 interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Rihanna confirmed that the long break did not mean she had completely stopped recording. She said she had been in the studio throughout those years but struggled to find music that represented the person and artist she had become.

That admission may be the biggest reason fans should not assume hundreds of Rihanna unreleased songs will eventually become albums, deluxe editions or archival releases. Rihanna told Harper’s Bazaar that previous versions of the project simply did not feel right as she evolved.

“I cannot put up anything mediocre,” she said while discussing the pressure surrounding her next body of work. She even joked that after fans had already waited eight years, they could “wait some more.”

In other words, Rihanna appears willing to leave entire eras of recorded material behind instead of releasing songs simply because they exist. According to Harper’s Bazaar, she rejected previous musical directions because they no longer matched her growth. That makes the size of Rihanna’s vault less of a guarantee that R9 is coming and more evidence of how selective she has become. A song recorded several years ago may have been strong enough for another artist, but Rihanna has made it clear that her own standard is whether she can still stand behind the record now.

There is also the question of whether music remains the center of Rihanna’s professional life at all. During a November 2024 Fenty Beauty event in Barbados, Rihanna delivered comments that immediately sparked retirement speculation. She reflected on how music initially opened doors for her before saying, “Music was the thing that got the attention, but God had other plans for me.”

The remark was not an official retirement announcement, but it carried extra weight because Rihanna had already spent years building Fenty Beauty, Fenty Skin, Savage X Fenty and other ventures outside recording. Rihanna previously denied being retired after wearing an “I’m Retired” shirt in 2024. According to the Los Angeles Times, she explained that the shirt was a joke and said plainly, “I’m not retired.”

There are still signs that the door to a new album remains open. As recently as August 2026, A$AP Rocky said Rihanna was actively working. Rocky revealed, “She’s in the studio right now,” before joking that he might get in trouble for sharing the update. Rihanna herself has not announced a release date, tracklist, or official title for her ninth studio album.

That contradiction is what makes the latest vault revelation so fascinating. Rihanna can have more than 170 potential records, continue entering the studio, and still decide that none of those older songs belong on her next album. Her comments over the years suggest she views music less like inventory waiting to be released and more like snapshots of different creative periods. If the songs no longer represent her, she has shown little hesitation about moving on.
