Excerpts from a new biography of Rita Ora, titled Hot Right Now, have the singer reflecting on her first relationship, which she says began when she was 14 and a student at the Sylvia Young Theatre School in London.
According to extracts published by The Sun on Sunday, Ora said the man was about 26 at the time. “I was 14 when I had my first relationship with a guy,” she said, adding that she had never been in a relationship before then.
Ora also spoke in an interview featured in the book about how much it meant to her at the time to feel noticed by an older man. She acknowledged that the situation amounted to child abuse, though she said she did not see herself as a victim and described herself as having been more mature than a 14 year old should be.
The excerpts sparked a lot of conversation about the age gap and about how Ora chose to describe her own experience. A statement from Ora’s representatives was not included in the excerpts we reviewed. The story was also covered by Yahoo Celebrity.
