Newly signed Seattle Mariners star Robinson Cano is in the headlines for more than his $240 million contract. According to reports from Fox News and the New York Daily News, a child support case in the Dominican Republic is back in the spotlight.
Jackelin, the mother of Cano’s three year old son, says the support payments have been inconsistent and that she believes their son deserves a better home than the small one they live in near San Pedro de Macoris. She says she has been struggling to raise him on the roughly $600 a month she receives. According to the reports, her only other income is about $100 a month from the Dominican Ministry of Sports for coaching volleyball.
The Daily News reports that a Santo Domingo judge has ordered the monthly payments doubled to $1,200, with another court date set for January 23.
“We want to secure the boy’s future and have something saved for him. This is a step toward providing that,” Jackelin’s attorney, Wendy Diaz, told the Daily News.
Cano’s side has disputed her claims. In an earlier statement, his publicist said Cano has provided a monthly stipend, a house, a car, insurance and school for his son, and that he hopes for an amicable resolution. Cano has not commented further.
