The city of Sacramento has agreed to pay $2.4 million to the two sons of Stephon Clark, the unarmed black man who was killed in the backyard of his grandmother’s home.
As you may recall, cops were responding to a call of a man wearing a black hoodie that was breaking car windows in a Sacramento neighborhood. Officers arrived on the scene and minutes later, Clark was found dead in his family’s backyard, shot seven times. The officers claimed they thought Clark had a weapon, which turned out to be a cellphone.
According to CNN, most of the money will be placed into a trust for Clark’s boys, now 5 and 2 years old, who will be able to access it tax-free over three years starting when each child turns 22. About a quarter of the money will go to lawyers, including the firm of high profile civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump.
In January, Clark’s family filed a $20 million wrongful death lawsuit against the city and the officers involved in the March 2018 shooting. In June, the family and the city reached a verbal settlement.
