Saks Fifth Avenue has confirmed that they are doing away with animal furs by the end of the fiscal year 2022.
On Wednesday, the luxury retailer announced that it would no longer carry animal furs from vendors nor manufacture fur clothing. Saks Chief Merchandising Officer, Tracy Margolies, said in a statement that the decision came as “the sale of fur remains a significant social issue.” She noted that eliminating animal furs is the “right step” for the company.
Also, Saks will shut down all of its fur salons by the end of the fiscal year 2021, which officially ends January 29th, 2022. The company will completely stop selling fur products online and in-store by the end of the fiscal year 2022, which ends January 28th, 2023.
Saks will continue to sell faux fur goods and products created from sheepskin, goatskin, lambskin, cattle hide, and genuine leathers.
The retailer follows fellow luxury store Nordstrom, which has also vowed to stop the sale of fur and exotic animal skin goods by the end of 2021. Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s have also pulled out of the animal fur business.
Animal rights activist has been protesting Saks and their fur salons for years. PETA President Ingrid Newkirk released a statement, saying that Saks fur salons “won’t be missed by today’s shoppers, who no longer find it acceptable to drape themselves in an abused animal’s stolen skin.”
