A grandfather has been sentenced to three years of probation after his 18 month old granddaughter died in a fall from a cruise ship window in 2019.
Salvatore pleaded guilty in connection with the death of his granddaughter Chloe, who fell from a Royal Caribbean ship, Freedom of the Seas, while it was docked in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He has said he believed the window was closed when he was playing with her and she fell from an 11th floor window to the concrete below.
Prosecutors said in a government statement that he negligently held a minor out of the window. He was sentenced on Monday and is expected to serve his probation at home rather than in jail.
Salvatore said in a statement that he felt a mixture of anger and relief after the sentencing, relieved that he will serve no jail time and that he did not have to admit any facts, and relieved that his family can close this chapter and move on together. He ended with a message to his granddaughter: “I miss you so much, Chloe.”
According to reports, Salvatore and his family are now focused on a civil lawsuit against Royal Caribbean.
