Over the last year, Sam Smith has created some of the greatest songs to put us in a mood. Who knew that at one point he contemplated suicide due to being overweight?
“I saw a picture of me on New Year’s Eve topless on a beach in Sydney and it made me want to kill myself,” Sam Smith told GQ. “I just thought I was huge. I’ve had issues with my weight since I was a kid. My dad became a fitness trainer when I was 12 and he tried to help me, but I’ve always had issues.”
You may have noticed that Smith has lost a significant amount of weight. He’s down 73 lbs after making significant changes to his diet. “I was put in contact with Amelia Freer, the dietician who got Boy George to lose all his weight,” he told GQ. Sam also is in touch with reality and knows that it’s almost impossible to eat clean if you’re broke. “The reality is I can do it now because I have a little bit more money, and that’s the sad thing.It’s impossible to eat healthily if you don’t have any money.”
The sad thing is, it really does cost a lot to eat healthy, or at least quality food. Why is that, America? Why do you have to spend hundreds a month to eat food that won’t kill you before you turn 60?
