San Francisco has experienced many firsts. It had its first Asian mayor, Mayor Ed Lee, who many held in high regard. Unfortunately, after many years of service, Mayor Lee passed away suddenly. Board of Supervisors President, London Breed stepped in to take his place and by doing so, made history by becoming the first black female mayor of San Francisco.

Breed will be the temporary mayor until the next mayor election on June 5th. She will have until Jan 9th to decide if she wants to make it a permanent thing. Breed said at a conference, “I ask for your patience, and I ask for your support, and I ask for your prayers. Our city’s values have never been more important, and in the months ahead, let’s carry on in Mayor Lee’s honor.”

The new mayor has quite the history. She grew up in public housing, rose to be elected to the Board of Supervisors in 2012 and in 2015, became the president.
