The 16-year-old shooter who opened fire at Saugus High School in California, killing two classmates has died from his injuries, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.
Authorities said Nathaniel Tennosuke Berhow was being treated for a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, his mother was with him when he died.
On Thursday morning, Berhow pulled a handgun out of his backpack at the Santa Clarita school and shot five other students before turning the gun on himself, police said.
According to CBS News, 15-year-old Gracie Muehlberger, and 14-year-old Dominic Blackwell were killed; the other three victims are expected to survive.
As the investigation is still ongoing, authorities have yet to identify a clear motive as to why Berhow carried out the deadly assault, which occurred on his sixteenth birthday. Berhow did not leave behind a diary or a manifesto, and he has not been linked to any violent ideology or hate group.
What is clear to authorities however is that Berhow planned the attack, the teen used the last bullet in the gun to shoot himself.
Officials don’t know where he obtained the gun as authorities said it was not one of the six guns in his home registered to his deceased father, although they noted that they did find several unregistered firearms in the home.
