Hope Solo married former NFL tight end Jerramy Stevens on Tuesday, one day after he was arrested on suspicion of assaulting her at her home in Kirkland, Washington.
Police were called to a party at the house early Monday morning. According to court documents, Solo’s brother Marcus called 911. He and Solo told officers that two or three unknown men at the party caused the disturbance, and Marcus said he used a stun gun on one of them. That man left before police arrived.
Officers found Stevens lying between the bed and the wall in an upstairs bedroom. Police said he appeared to be hiding. Stevens told them he was sleeping on the floor and didn’t hear any fight. He admitted he and Solo had argued about whether to live in Washington or Florida after the wedding.
Solo, who had a cut on her elbow, refused to give police a statement. Officers arrested Stevens on suspicion of fourth degree domestic assault, based on the cut, the argument, signs of a struggle in the bedroom and dried blood on his shirt.
Later Monday, a Kirkland Municipal Court judge released Stevens, saying there was no evidence connecting him to an assault. He was not charged. Police said the case was still under investigation and charges could come later if new evidence turned up.
Hours after leaving court, the couple got married. According to court records, Solo, 31, and Stevens, who turned 33 the day of the wedding, had been dating for about two months and applied for their marriage license last week.
Jillian Loyden, Solo’s backup goalkeeper on the U.S. women’s national team, was at the wedding. “Happy to witness such an amazing celebration of real love,” she tweeted.
Hope Solo, a two time Olympic gold medalist, has not spoken publicly about the arrest.
Update: Two weeks later, at her first national team appearance since the wedding, Solo said she has never been hit, that she is happily married, and that the media blew the incident out of proportion.
