Former White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders opened up about the time Donald Trump joked with her to “take one for the team” after the North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un winked at her.
Sanders,38, is set to publish her new memoir Speaking for Myself: Faith, Freedom, and the Fight of Our Lives Inside the Trump White House next week, PEOPLE reports.
The Guardian reviewed the book or its excerpts, and according to the publication, Sanders recalled the time when Trump said Jong Un “hit on” her at a June 2018 summit in Singapore. Trump, 74, then suggested she “go to North Korea and take one for the team,” Sanders wrote.
The former press secretary who left the Trump administration in 2019, said that North Korea’s leader was “staring” at her.
“We made direct eye contact, and Kim nodded and appeared to wink at me. I was stunned,” she wrote. “I quickly looked down and continued taking notes. … All I could think was, ‘What just happened? Surely Kim Jong Un did not just mark me!?'”
After the strange encounter, she told Trump and his chief of staff at the time, John Kelly, what went down, but said Trump laughed about it, saying,” Kim Jong Un hit on you! He did! He f—— hit on you!”
And Trump didn’t stop there; his inappropriateness continued, even after Sanders-who is a mom to daughter Scarlett and sons Huck and George and wife to husband Bryan-insisted he stop. “Sir, please stop,” she said. Trump then responded by saying, “Well, Sarah, that settles it. You’re going to North Korea and taking one for the team! Your husband and kids will miss you, but you’ll be a hero to your country!”
Sanders said both men “howled with laughter” as the car drove on, The Guardian reported.
But don’t get it confused, Sanders’ memoir isn’t criticizing Trump; in fact, it’s a paean to the president. The book’s description describes Sanders’ account as both “frank” and “revealing” as she discusses “her faith, the challenges of being a working mother at the highest level of American politics, her relationship with the press, and her unique role in the historic fight raging between the Trump administration and its critics for the future of our country.”
During her time in the White House administration, Sanders stirred controversy, including the time she admitted to lying to reporters about the FBI’s support of James Comey. However, she later said it was a “slip of the tongue.”
