There is a very specific kind of power in a Black mama on a Saturday morning. Pine Sol in the bucket, windows wide open, baseboards getting scrubbed like they owe her money. And underneath all of that? A soundtrack so sacred it could not be argued with. Ten songs. Ten different artists. One impossible choice.
1. Maze featuring Frankie Beverly – “Before I Let Go” (1981)
Peaked at No. 13 on the R&B chart and became the undisputed official cookout anthem. Frankie Beverly, who passed in 2024 at 77, stacked nine gold albums and two No. 1 R&B singles with Maze. Beyoncé covered it for her 2019 “Homecoming” project. Questlove once called it the official song of Black people, and he was not wrong.
2. The Isley Brothers – “Between the Sheets” (1983)
Climbed to No. 3 on the R&B chart and helped push its album to platinum. The Isleys scored Hot 100 hits in six consecutive decades and took the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014. The Notorious B.I.G. flipped this one into “Big Poppa” in 1994, and it has been sampled dozens of times since, from Jay-Z to Gwen Stefani.
3. Anita Baker – “Giving You the Best That I Got” (1988)
Hit No. 1 on the R&B chart, No. 1 on Adult Contemporary, and No. 3 on the Hot 100. Baker owns eight Grammy Awards. This one won Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song at the 1989 Grammys, then did something no song had ever done: it won Best Female R&B Vocal Performance again in 1990. Only Aretha Franklin owns more wins in that category.
4. Luther Vandross – “Never Too Much” (1981)
His debut solo single hit No. 1 on the R&B chart for two weeks and No. 33 on the Hot 100. Luther won eight Grammys, sold more than forty million records, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2026. The album went double platinum and earned him two Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist. The bassline alone could motivate anyone to scrub a baseboard.
5. Aretha Franklin – “Rock Steady” (1971)
Reached No. 9 on the Hot 100 and No. 2 on the R&B chart. The Queen of Soul won 18 competitive Grammys and wrote this funky masterpiece herself. Donny Hathaway played organ on it. If this song did not get you moving with the mop, your mop was broken.
6. Gladys Knight and the Pips – “Midnight Train to Georgia” (1973)
Spent two weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 and topped the R&B chart. It won the 1974 Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus and later entered the Grammy Hall of Fame. Originally titled “Midnight Plane to Houston,” Gladys and the Pips turned it into their signature song and a permanent part of the culture.
7. The O’Jays – “For the Love of Money” (1973)
Hit No. 9 on the Hot 100 and No. 3 on the R&B chart. The Gamble and Huff production, that unmistakable bassline, and lyrics about the almighty dollar made it the mama’s funk record. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. Later generations know it as the theme to “The Apprentice.”
8. Teddy Pendergrass – “Love T.K.O.” (1980)
Peaked at No. 2 on the R&B chart and No. 44 on the Hot 100, from his platinum “TP” album. Teddy owned ladies’ night concerts and redefined the R&B crooner with that voice. Written by the Womack and Womack family, this one proved Philly soul could survive the new decade with its elegance intact.
9. Earth, Wind and Fire – “September” (1978)
Hit No. 8 on the Hot 100 and No. 1 on the R&B chart. Six times platinum. Added to the Library of Congress National Recording Registry in 2018. The band won six Grammys and scored seven consecutive double platinum albums. Do you remember the twenty-first night of September? Every mama ever sure did.
10. Sade – “Smooth Operator” (1984)
Peaked at No. 5 on the Hot 100 for two weeks and spent two weeks at No. 1 on Adult Contemporary. The debut album “Diamond Life” went four times platinum in the United States, and Sade took home four Grammys across her career. The Sunday morning cleaning song. Elegant. Precise. Unbothered. Just like mama with the duster.
