At an Indiana middle school, a transgender student must be allowed to use the boy’s restroom.
Judge Tanya Walton Pratt dismissed a motion from the Metropolitan School District of Martinsville to postpone a previous ruling forcing John R. Wooden Middle School to allow a transgender student to use the boy’s restroom.
In the judge’s findings, she claimed the district failed to produce proof that the student’s use of the boy’s facility would cause “irreparable harm.”
She said, “In addition, the School District has not presented any new arguments or evidence to demonstrate that the public interest weighs in favor of maintaining the School District’s authority over such matters until more clear and direct guidance on Title IX is provided.”
Previously, the student had been denied access to the males’ restroom, banned from playing male sports, and using the pronouns “he” and “him.”
Pratt’s injunction “would be disruptive of the school’s operations…and undermine the school’s order and authority,” according to the school, which is appealing the initial verdict.
