Nursing Home

After sending their patients to a warehouse during Hurricane Ida, seven Louisiana nursing homes had their licenses revoked on Tuesday. State health officials report that seven of the residents sheltered at the warehouse died.

More than 800 nursing home residents were brought to a warehouse in Independence, about 55 miles east of Baton Rouge. The patients were sheltered in unsanitary and unsafe conditions, resulting in a class-action lawsuit against seven nursing homes. The suit was filed by family members of the residents who were moved to the warehouse.

CNN obtained more than 60 911 calls made from the warehouse. At least 30 of the calls asked for help before and after the hurricane made landfall. There were calls for stopped breathing, seizures, and one for a diabetic patient who needed transport because they had not eaten. The caller cited a lack of supplies for the patient going without food.

According to the health department, the following facilities lost their license: River Palms Nursing and Rehab, Maison Orleans Healthcare Center, Park Place Healthcare Nursing Home, West Jefferson Health Care Center, Maison Deville Nursing Home of Harvey, South Lafourche Nursing and Rehab, and Maison De Ville Nursing Home. The facilities are not allowed to take any of the residents back in or admit any new patients.
