Several people were arrested after a Black Lives Matter protest in Yucaipa, San Bernardino County, California, ended with a deputy being assaulted, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
The department said nearly 280 people, including protesters and counter protesters, gathered on Saturday around 5 p.m. on both sides of Yucaipa Boulevard near Fifth Street. The sheriff’s department said people walked into the street and blocked traffic, and deputies closed the road after what they called a volatile situation between the opposing groups. The crowd was ordered to disperse.
According to the department, officers were nearly hit by a vehicle moving erratically through the closed street. Deputies arrested the three people inside, identified as Gilbert, Michael and the driver. The department said a hammer and makeshift weapons were found in the vehicle but did not say what the makeshift weapons were. All three were booked on felony charges at West Valley Detention Center, including assault on a peace officer with a deadly weapon. The department said an officer was injured during the arrests.
A separate driver, identified as Sylvia, was also arrested for driving in circles in the closed roadway with a juvenile in the car. Authorities said four more people, Mayra, Crystal, Tobias and Daniel, were arrested for failing to disperse.
The charges are allegations. Baller Alert did not have responses from those arrested when this report was first published.
