A cloud of internal concern that had been quietly building inside Michigan’s football program finally erupted this week, ending in the abrupt dismissal of head coach Sherrone Moore after what officials called an “inappropriate relationship with a staff member.”

According to reports, Moore’s behavior had raised alarms for weeks before Wednesday’s firing. College football reporter Pete Thamel said the situation had been “percolating” behind the scenes as members of the staff noticed a shift in the coach’s conduct.

“There had been a lot of uneasiness on the Michigan staff, sources had told me Sherrone Moore had been acting strange, berating assistant coaches, not acting in a normal way,” Thamel reported on “SportsCenter” shortly after the announcement that Moore had been removed in just his second season leading the Wolverines.

Thamel added that an initial internal review had calmed near the end of the regular season. Michigan last played on November 29 in a 27-9 loss to rival Ohio State. But he said concerns resurfaced over the past week, culminating in what he called a “rare” public statement from the university.

“It is rare that you get a statement like the one Michigan had, being as explicit as they are, saying it was an inappropriate relationship with a staff member that led to Sherrone Moore’s firing,” Thamel noted.

Michigan’s release confirmed Moore was terminated with cause, meaning the university will not owe him the buyout outlined in his contract. CBS reported that several influential donors had “cooled” on supporting the program as the allegations circulated, though the timing of that shift was not detailed.

The fallout escalated further Wednesday when Moore was detained hours after being fired. The Saline (Michigan) police department told ESPN it had taken the 39-year-old into custody before transferring him to Pittsfield Township police for “investigation into potential charges.”

Pittsfield police said officers responded to a reported assault at 4:10 p.m. Wednesday and arrested a suspect, who was not publicly named. Moore was being held at the Washtenaw County jail pending review by prosecutors. Police emphasized the case appeared isolated, noting, “The incident does not appear to be random in nature, and there appears to be no ongoing threat to the community.”

Away from the field, Moore and his wife, Kelli, share three children, Shiloh, Solei and Sadei. The couple married in 2015, and Moore had publicly praised his wife in past social media posts.

The university’s investigation remains active as the Wolverines prepare for a turbulent transition and the college football world continues processing one of the more startling mid-season coaching collapses in recent memory.
