The nostalgia of the late ’90s has resurfaced in a public exchange between R&B icon Brandy and rapper turned politician Shyne.
After Brandy took to social media earlier this week to firmly deny ever being romantically involved with Shyne, the rapper doubled down on his claims, suggesting she is once again prioritizing her public persona over the truth.
In a video clip shared online, Shyne expressed his frustration with Brandy’s denial of their past. “Brandy, you know, she out here denying that she dated me and Ma$e at the same time. Come on, man, stop it,” he stated. He insisted that his version of events is 100% true and drew a direct parallel to a well-known past controversy involving her marital status. “She’s lying again, just like she lied on Oprah about not being married. She went on there, said she wasn’t married to protect her image, had to go back and apologize later because the truth came out.”
Shyne is referencing the 2002 situation where Brandy claimed to be married to producer Robert “Big Bert” Smith to maintain a certain image while pregnant, a claim she later admitted was untrue during a sit down with Oprah Winfrey.
Shyne suggests a similar motive is at play now, stating, “Same thing now—she’s trying to protect her image, rewrite history, act like it was just platonic or whatever. Nah, we was involved, me and her, Ma$e and her, it was what it was in the late ’90s. I ain’t got no reason to lie about this now.”
The tension began after Shyne appeared on the It Is What It Is podcast with Mase and Cam’ron. During the episode he reminisced and joked about their alleged past romantic involvements with Brandy during that era. Brandy quickly moved to shut the rumors down on Instagram, asserting she only had a “platonic friendship” with Shyne and calling the dating narrative untrue.
While Brandy continues to focus on her upcoming memoir, Phases, where she promises to debunk many of the misnomers about her life, Shyne remains firm in his stance, claiming the facts don’t change regardless of her denials.
