Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso gave a hometown hero a legendary welcome this past weekend, presenting Shyne with the Key to Brooklyn.
During a youth centered event in the heart of East Flatbush, Reynoso officially declared April 25, 2026, as “Shyne Day” to honor the artist turned statesman’s impact on culture and his community.
The ceremony took place at SUNY Downstate as part of a mentorship expo for young men. The event focused on moving past Shyne’s hip hop legacy to highlight his current role as a Belizean lawmaker and a public advocate. To Reynoso, Shyne’s path from Brooklyn streets to the halls of government serves as a blueprint for local youth.
“Shyne embodies what is possible when a community believes in its young people,” Reynoso stated during the presentation. “East Flatbush raised Shyne, and it only made sense to honor him here as we work together to create opportunities for the next generation.”
The expo offered more than just recognition. It provided attendees with workshops on financial literacy, career development, and entrepreneurship. Shyne joined Public Advocate Jumaane Williams at the event to offer personal guidance and provide tailored suits to the young men in attendance to help them prepare for future professional roles.
For Shyne, the honor was a deeply emotional homecoming that allowed him to reflect on his roots while giving back to the neighborhood that shaped him.
“This is the community that raised me, and it’s important for me to pass that love forward,” Shyne said. “There couldn’t be a better way to celebrate this milestone than coming back home and pouring into the next generation.”
The celebration also aligns with the 25th anniversary of Shyne’s iconic debut album. During the expo, Shyne surprised several participants with tickets to his upcoming anniversary concert at the Kings Theatre. With financial backing from Reynoso’s office and support from local agencies, the day served as a practical investment in Brooklyn’s future, offering young men the resources and mindset needed to succeed in various industries.
