“Sinners,” Ryan Coogler’s genre-bending vampire thriller, has officially become the most nominated film in Academy Awards history with a staggering 16 nods. No movie has ever crossed that threshold before.
Set in 1930s Mississippi, the film stars Michael B. Jordan in his first-ever dual role as twin brothers who open a blues club while navigating racism, economic survival, and a growing supernatural threat. Audiences showed up in force, pushing the film to $368 million globally and turning it into both a critical and commercial powerhouse.
The nominations span nearly every major category, locking the film in as this year’s Oscars heavyweight, with the nominations as follows:
Best Picture
Best Director for Ryan Coogler
Best Leading Actor for Michael B. Jordan
Best Supporting Actor for Delroy Lindo
Best Supporting Actress for Wunmi Mosaku
Best Original Screenplay
Best Casting
Best Costume Design
Best Cinematography
Best Film Editing
Best Production Design
Best Sound
Best Original Score
Best Makeup and Hairstyling
Best Visual Effects
Best Original Song
The costume design nomination adds another historic layer. Ruth E. Carter is now the most nominated Black woman in Oscar history with five total career nods. Cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw also made history, becoming only the fourth woman ever nominated in that category.
The film officially breaks the long standing 14 nomination record held by “All About Eve,” “Titanic,” and “La La Land.” While awards season momentum suggests wins may be spread across multiple films, Sinners has already secured its place in Oscars history.
The ceremony airs March 15, with Conan O’Brien returning as host.
