Six Flags Over Georgia Reopening Friday Just Days After Man Falls to His Death From Goliath Roller Coaster

Six Flags Over Georgia is preparing to welcome visitors back on Friday, October 16, just four days after a man tragically lost his life after falling from the park’s Goliath roller coaster.

According to WSB-TV Channel 2 Atlanta, the amusement park will resume its scheduled operations while authorities continue investigating Monday’s fatal incident. However, officials have not confirmed whether Goliath, the attraction at the center of the investigation, will reopen alongside the rest of the park.

The Six Flags reopening comes as questions remain about how the tragedy happened and what safety measures may be necessary to prevent another incident.

The victim, identified by Cobb County police as 42-year-old Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem, died Monday, October 12, after being ejected from the Goliath roller coaster shortly before 4 p.m.

According to ABC News, investigators said preliminary interviews with witnesses and park employees indicated that Kariem struck other passengers before falling beneath the attraction.

Emergency responders found him unresponsive, and he was later pronounced dead. Four additional people were reportedly injured during the incident, although officials have not publicly detailed the extent of their injuries.

The fatal accident immediately raised concerns about the Goliath roller coaster, one of Six Flags Over Georgia’s most recognizable attractions.

The ride, which opened in 2006, features a 200-foot first hill and reaches speeds of approximately 70 miles per hour. Unlike some roller coasters, Goliath does not take passengers upside down and relies on lap bar restraints rather than individual seat belts.

According to The Associated Press, investigators have not determined how Kariem became separated from his seat or whether a restraint issue, mechanical problem, or another factor contributed to his death.

Those unanswered questions remain particularly important as the park prepares to resume operations.

Georgia’s Office of the Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire has launched an investigation into the incident. The agency oversees amusement ride inspections throughout the state and is examining the circumstances surrounding Kariem’s death.

In a statement provided to WSB-TV, officials said they were conducting a comprehensive review to determine what happened and whether applicable safety requirements were followed.

Six Flags also addressed the tragedy in a statement expressing condolences to Kariem’s loved ones.

“We are deeply saddened by the guest incident at our park today. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the guest’s family, friends, and loved ones. We are also providing support to the guests and team members affected.”

The company added that it was cooperating with local authorities and would limit additional public details out of respect for the family’s privacy.

Beyond the Georgia location, the incident prompted Six Flags Entertainment Corporation to temporarily shut down nine similar roller coasters across six other amusement parks in the United States and Canada.

According to The Associated Press, the affected attractions include Raging Bull at Six Flags Great America, another Goliath coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain, and Nitro at Six Flags Great Adventure.

The temporary closures also include Fury 325 and Thunder Striker at Carowinds, Leviathan and Behemoth at Canada’s Wonderland, and Orion and Diamondback at Kings Island.

Six Flags described the broader shutdowns as precautionary. However, the company has not publicly established a timeline for reopening those attractions or explained what inspections or safety reviews must be completed beforehand.

Meanwhile, Swiss roller coaster manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard, which designed Goliath, confirmed that it is also examining the deadly incident.

“Our thoughts are with the family and those affected,” company representative Olivier Bolliger said in a statement. “We are actively investigating the incident and will not comment further until we have a better understanding of what happened.”

The Goliath roller coaster investigation has also renewed conversations about amusement park safety regulations across the country.

According to The Associated Press, permanent amusement park attractions are primarily regulated at the state level rather than through a single federal inspection system. Individual states maintain different oversight and inspection requirements.

Although serious roller coaster injuries remain statistically uncommon, safety experts have emphasized the importance of understanding what happened before drawing conclusions about the equipment or operating procedures involved.

For Kariem’s loved ones, the investigation comes amid an overwhelming loss.

According to ABC News, Kariem worked at Wesley International Academy in Atlanta, where he served as an information technology manager, technology teacher, and robotics coach. He had spent more than 12 years working at the school.

The school remembered him as a respected educator whose dedication extended well beyond his professional responsibilities.

“His love for Wesley, dedication to our students, and commitment to our school community were evident in everything he did,” the school said in a statement.

The family’s grief has also been complicated by disturbing images reportedly circulating online following the accident.

According to WSB-TV, relatives have asked that images appearing to show Kariem’s final moments be removed from social media. Family members are also seeking information about who originally shared them.

As the Six Flags reopening approaches, visitors may return to the park, but the investigation into Kariem’s death remains unresolved.

Authorities have not announced a definitive cause, and the public has yet to receive confirmation of when Goliath could safely resume carrying passengers.

For now, the park’s reopening marks a return to scheduled operations, not the conclusion of the investigation into the tragedy that claimed Kariem’s life.
