A federal grand jury has indicted six men on charges of conspiring to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. The men are accused, not convicted, and the allegations have not been tested in court.

CNN reports that Daniel, Ty, Kaleb, Adam and Brandon were indicted on Wednesday and pleaded not guilty at proceedings on Thursday. A sixth defendant, Barry, was also indicted. His attorney said he had not yet been arraigned. All six have been in custody since their arrests in October. The indictment alleges that between June 6 and October 7 the group conspired to “unlawfully seize, kidnap, abduct and carry away” the governor.

According to authorities, the group planned to take Whitmer from a vacation home and set off explosives on a bridge to slow police. Investigators say they stopped the plan by making arrests before it could be carried out. A separate group of eight people has been charged by the state, and seven of them were reportedly part of or linked to a Michigan militia group called the Wolverine Watchmen.

CNN, citing a federal complaint, reports that the FBI learned of the group’s plans in early 2020 through a social media group. Informants were then sent to a June 6 meeting in Dublin, Ohio, with Barry, Adam and about 13 others. Their reported motive was anger over the Covid 19 restrictions Whitmer put in place.
