Fans were given some bittersweet news this week when FX announced that “Snowfall” was renewed for a sixth and final season.
The critically acclaimed series, co-created by the late John Singleton, was renewed as Season 5 prevailed as the series’ most-watched season yet. However, considering the crumbling drug empire of the main character Franklin Saint and the entire Saint family, it is not a complete shock that the series is nearing a dramatic conclusion.
Damson Idris, who produces the show and portrays Franklin, stated that saying goodbye to his beloved character, which has become a household name, will be “heartbreaking.” However, he is grateful for the groundbreaking show that he, Singleton, and FX presented to the world.
“I’m incredibly proud of the history we have all made. Especially the impact Snowfall has had on the culture,” Idris said. “I know John Singleton is looking down, smiling proud. “
The current season, which is more than midway through, is set in 1986 and follows the Saint family as they navigate through heightened measures to tackle the crack-cocaine epidemic. The storyline is heavily influenced by the real-life death of basketball star Len Bias, who was drafted No. 2 overall by the Boston Celtics in the 1986 NBA Draft but died two days later of a cocaine overdose. As seen in this season of “Snowfall,” Bias’s death angered politicians and law enforcement, who used his death to impose strict policing and intricate drug investigations across the nation.
Idris took to his Instagram to thank fans for their support over the years as he tackled his iconic role.
“Thank you to everyone that has supported this journey. I got this role when I was 23 years old. I’m now 30. Legacy stuff. What a ride it has been. Only the beginning,” he wrote.
