A scary story out of Kansas is a reminder to stay alert when meeting someone from a dating app.
According to an arrest affidavit reported by several outlets, a 20 year old University of Kansas student says she was held against her will and beaten by a 30 year old man she met on Tinder. Authorities identified the suspect as Shane. The alleged incident began on April 12 after he picked her up from her sorority house for a second date.
The affidavit alleges that he took her to his trailer, where two of his friends were also present for a time. After the friends left, he allegedly accused her of flirting with one of them and began hitting her. Investigators say he told her she could not go home until the swelling around her eyes went down.
The affidavit alleges she was kept in the trailer for about six days, during which she was repeatedly beaten and threatened. It says she tried to leave once and was choked until she lost consciousness. It also alleges he made her contact friends on Facebook to say she was fine.
The following Monday, he allegedly took her home and told her not to contact police. She was then treated at a hospital for injuries including bruising, swelling and broken blood vessels in her eyes.
Shane was arrested and charged with four felony counts of battery and one felony count of kidnapping. If convicted, he could face up to 32 years in prison. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
The takeaway: meet new people in public places, tell a friend where you are, and trust your gut.
