A Southwest Airlines pilot has been suspended for attacking a flight attendant during an argument over mask-wearing.

The altercation took place on October 18th inside of a San Jose, California hotel bar. The flight crew was staying overnight at the hotel when the argument ensued regarding mask mandates. It remains unclear precisely what was said that pushed the airman over the edge, but he was cited for assault and battery. The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office will determine if the pilot will face criminal charges.

After catching wind of the altercation, Southwest placed the pilot on leave to conduct its own internal investigation into the incident.

“Last month, we received a report regarding a crew disagreement that occurred while off-duty during an overnight trip,” the airline company said in a statement.

In the days following the situation, Southwest sent flight crews an email warning them of “crossing the line” during arguments and reminding them that this behavior could result in termination.

TWU Local 556, the flight attendants union founded in 1975 to protect the interests of in-flight crew members, is offering support to the attendant as the investigation moves forward.

In recent days, Southwest Airlines has experienced several controversies surrounding its pilots. Last Friday, a pilot caused outrage by using an anti-Joe Biden phrase during a flight from Houston to Albuquerque.
