Spike Lee has teamed up with HBO to develop a new 9/11 and coronavirus documentary on the 20th anniversary of the attacks.
The multi-part doc, titled “NYC Epicenters 9/11→ 2021½,” will begin focusing on the unprecedented events on September 11th, 2001. The project will cover the lives lost that fateful day and how New York City has rebuilt in the twenty years since the devastating terror attack, only to now face the devastating COVID-19 pandemic.
“As a New Yawker who bleeds orange and blue, I’m proud to have a ‘Spike Lee Joint’ about how our/my city dealt with being the epicenters of 9/11 and COVID-19,” Lee said.
Over 200 interviews have been conducted for the film, which will feature firsthand accounts from New Yorkers and visual imagery.
The docu-series will be directed by HBO Documentary Films in collaboration with Lee’s film company, 40 Acres, and a Mule Filmworks. Lee will direct and produce, while Barry Alexander Brown and Adam Gough will serve as editors.
HBO confirmed the project and expressed its excitement over working with Lee, who previously produced several HBO docs, including “When The Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts” and “4 Little Girls.”
