Spirit Airlines is officially over. On Saturday, the airline posted to Instagram to announce they are shutting down everything. This news comes right after a $500 million government bailout deal fell through, according to the Wall Street Journal.
It is with great disappointment that Spirit Airlines has started winding down its global operations, effective immediately,” the company said. “All flights have been cancelled, and customer service is no longer available.”
If you have a flight booked, don’t expect them to move you to a different airline. They are just giving the money back. “While we are not able to help rebook your flight on another airline, we will automatically process refunds for any flights purchased through Spirit with a credit or debit card to the original form of payment,” the statement continued.
Spirit has been struggling for a long time. They were trying to get the Trump administration to step in with the cash they needed to stay afloat, but they couldn’t get the bondholders or the government to actually sign off on dropping that bag.
Trump even talked about the situation during a CNBC interview on April 21. “Spirit’s in trouble, and I’d love somebody to buy Spirit. It’s 14,000 jobs, and maybe the federal government should help that one out,” he said.
In the end, it wasn’t enough to save them. After 33 years in the game, the budget carrier is done. “We are proud of the impact of our ultra-low-cost model on the industry for the last 33 years and had hoped to serve our Guests for many years to come,” the airline concluded.
