The body of Stephen Smith— the teenage boy whose death was called a hit-and-run—has been exhumed following the release of additional information in the Alex Murdaugh case.
Smith’s death was considered an accident for years, but now there are questions surrounding his death.
Smith was 19 when he was found dead on a dark road in Hampton County, South Carolina, in July 2015. The coroner ruled his death a hit and run, but that never made sense, TMZ reported.
Stephen had a gash in his head from a bullet or some object but suffered no other injuries below his torso, which is typical in a car accident. There was also no debris from the car on the road. Instead, there were signs of homicide.
Sandy Smith, Stephen’s mom, has pushed to reclassify his case for years. She recently commissioned a private autopsy to determine what happened to her son. However, authorities have already reclassified the case as a homicide.
Buster Murdaugh and Stephen went to school together. But Buster has denied any involvement, and authorities have two persons of interest that are not part of the Murdaugh family.
Stephen’s case has been a mystery, with many questions, including why Randy Murdaugh was quick to offer help to his family after Stephen’s death, even before his body was officially identified.
