Former NBA guard Stephon Marbury was back in the headlines in February 2013 after a court ruling over a hush money agreement became public.
According to TMZ, which obtained the lawsuit, Marbury signed a written agreement offering a former chef named Thurayyah $900,000 to keep a 2006 affair quiet. Atlanta Black Star reported that he paid her $600,000 and then stopped. She sued for the remaining $331,584.50.
Marbury reportedly refused to pay and argued that her lawsuit breached the confidentiality deal. That argument did not work. On Feb. 1, a judge sided with Thurayyah and ordered Marbury to pay the remaining $331,584.50 plus interest, according to Atlanta Black Star. Marbury had not publicly explained why he put the agreement in writing.
The ruling made the whole arrangement public, including to his wife. The lesson here is simple: if you sign a deal, you have to honor it, even when it is a deal you would rather nobody read about.
Around the same time, the sports site Full Court Pumps reported that it received an anonymous tip about a private video of Marbury that was recorded without his knowledge. Nobody has said who recorded or shared it. Baller Alert is not showing or linking to those images, and we did not see a response from Marbury in the reports.
