Steve Kerr Explains Why The Warriors Will Not Be Visiting Trump’s White House: “It’s a Human Respect Issue”

Just months before Steve Kerr and the Golden State Warriors head to Washington, D.C. for what would have been the tradition championship trip to the White House, the team’s coach revealed the reason why the trip will only be in the city to face off against the Washington Wizards.

During an interview with CNN’s David Axelrod, Kerr said the team would not be visiting Donald Trump’s White House after the Celebrity-in-chief rescinded Steph Curry’s invitation. Although Curry had already announced that he would rather not take part in the traditional trip, Trump, in an effort to have the final say, uninvited the team’s captain.

Now, just ahead of the scheduled trip, Steve Kerr is opening up about the team’s decision not to go. He revealed that “times have changed,” and said “the whole dynamic” of the White House visit has “shifted entirely.”

“I’ve been lucky to visit the White House with, I think, four different presidents, President Reagan, President Clinton, both President Bushes,” he said. “I didn’t always agree with their policy, but I never once thought ‘Oh my gosh, I’m not going to go because I disagree with, you know, immigration or some foreign policy or tax reform’,” he said, revealing that the actual issue is a “human respect issue.”

“With all of those presidents that I mentioned, they were all above reproach in terms of their respect for their fellow man, and their respect for the office. And I don’t think any of us see that right now,” he continued. “It’s difficult to reconcile that and just say we’ll put all that aside. You know, he can make fun of handicapped people, he can, you know, he can say a lot of, you know, nasty things, ugly things, whether it’s about women or whomever,” he said, adding that Curry’s decision to speak out was “totally supported.”

“There can be a lot of things that happen that are just really difficult to just say all right, we’ll put that aside and go visit and shake his hand. It doesn’t feel right,” he said.
