The wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas demanded that the mayor of their town take down a Black Lives Matter banner.

The Washington Post reports that Virginia Thomas sent an email to Clifton, Virginia, mayor William Holloway to demand the banner that read, “Welcome to Clifton where Black Lives Matter” be taken down.

“Would you please remove the BLM sign from Clifton?” Thomas’ email read. “As leaders of this community, you should be smarter than promoting such a group as this, who uses race to foment chaos to destabilize the nation.”

“BLM is a bit of a dangerous Trojan Horse, and they are catching well-meaning people into dangerous posturing that can invite mob rule and property looting,” she added. “Let’s not be tricked into joining cause with radical extremists seeking to foment a cultural revolution because they hate America.”

Clifton is a predominantly white neighborhood, and the banner is hung on the town’s Main Street.

Virginia, who is white, is the wife of the only Black Supreme Court Justice.

Mayor Holloway said the banner is a show of solidarity with the Black community. He asked for feedback from the community before the banner was put in place, and the community agreed.

Holloway said there was unrest in the town, and he wanted to act fast and make a statement.

According to the Washington Post, one of Holloway’s legal offices “had all of its windows smashed out of it.”

“We couldn’t go to work there. It was a volatile time,” Holloway said.
