A former assistant principal at Norland High School in Miami Gardens, Florida has been charged in the death of Kameela, a teacher at the same school. Police took Ernest, 39, into custody early Friday morning on an arrest warrant for first degree murder. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Kameela, a 41 year old mother of two, was last seen on May 15 pulling into her aunt’s driveway before abruptly driving off. She was missing for more than a week before a teenager found her body along the bank of a canal in Miami Gardens, between Florida’s Turnpike and a gated neighborhood called Andover. The county medical examiner’s office ruled that she died of blunt force trauma.
According to the Miami Herald, investigators focused on Ernest early on. The canal sits across the street from his home. Local news reports citing investigators say they believe Kameela died inside his home, that her body and car were later moved, and that phone records placed her at his home around the time she disappeared. Those claims have not been tested in court.
Kameela’s family told the Miami Herald that she had known Ernest since childhood and that they initially did not believe he had anything to do with her disappearance.
After her body was found, Ernest posted on social media asking anyone with information to come forward and urging people not to rely on rumors. He described Kameela as more than a sister and wrote that for 20 years she had been at his side. A response to the charge was not available at the time of publication.
