Two suspects are in custody after a shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch in Colorado, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. The school serves about 1,850 students from kindergarten through twelfth grade.
Sheriff Tony Spurlock said the suspects are believed to be students at the school. He described one as an adult and the other as a juvenile. CNN reported that the adult has been identified as 18 year old Devon Erickson. The name of the second suspect has been withheld because he or she is a minor. Authorities said they would not release photos at this time so they do not compromise the investigation. No charges had been announced as of this report.
Reports say the shooting began shortly before 2 p.m. Spurlock said the suspects got deep inside the building and entered two separate classrooms. A spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office said one student, an 18 year old, was killed. Eight other students were taken to area hospitals, and several were in critical condition.
The shooting happened close to the 20th anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting, which took place about 7 miles from this school.
