Swae Lee recently stopped by The Breakfast Club to clear the air regarding his political stance and those viral comments about the election.
In a sit-down with Charlamagne Tha God, Jess Hilarious, and DJ Envy, the Rae Sremmurd hitmaker addressed the rumors head on, making it clear that he isn’t playing for any specific political team.
Charlamagne jumped right into the controversy, asking, “They said you hated Kamala Harris. Is that true?” Swae explained that his critique of the political landscape isn’t about hate, but about a lack of trust. I don’t hate Kamala Harris but like I ain’t never announced my solidarity with no politician.”
He noted that while people were quick to label him a supporter because he didn’t immediately denounce certain figures, he has never worn a MAGA hat or officially endorsed the movement.
“I don’t support really no politicians because I do my research. I see what they really gonna do for the people. Like what are they gonna do that’s gonna affect my everyday life?”
The conversation shifted to the money being offered during the campaign season. Charlamagne asked the question everyone wanted to know, “But speaking of getting like I could have got paid by Trump and everything,” to which Swae revealed he was actually offered a significant payout, around ninety bands, to perform and align himself with the campaign.
However, he turned it down because of the strings attached. “I turn that shit down. Like I ain’t standing with that shit either,” he said. He mentioned that the contract required him to wear the hat and post support on social media, something he wasn’t willing to do. “You would have seen me actively at the White House with Trump performing. Yeah you know what I’m saying?”
Swae further explained that while he might agree with certain tax policies, other actions, like changes to how Black history and literature are taught in schools, deeply bothered him. That really fucked me up when he like taking the slave shit out the curriculum and all that,” he shared. He emphasized that his goal is to see America first by taking care of the people at the source rather than focusing on foreign interests.
To wrap things up, the artist confirmed that his 2014 hit Up Like Trump has officially been scrubbed from his setlist. When asked if he still performs it, Swae responded, “No I don’t even perform it now. It’s crazy. It’s like it’s too political.” He even joked that the song might have been the original inspiration for the run at the presidency in the first place, but since it no longer aligns with his mission to stay neutral and informed, he’s leaving it in the past.
