A routine trip to the pharmacy just turned into a double-check moment for millions of shoppers after a sweeping eye drop recall hit shelves nationwide. The eye drop recall is now pulling more than 3.1 million bottles off the market, with products sold at major retailers like CVS Health, Walgreens, Rite Aid, and Kroger.
Manufacturer K.C. Pharmaceuticals issued the recall across eight different brands and multiple product sizes. According to CBS News, “The products were sold under a number of brand names, including Dry Eye Relief Eye Drops and Artificial Tears Sterile Lubricant Eye Drops.” That list stretches across commonly used over-the-counter options, meaning many consumers may already have the affected bottles at home.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration classified the situation as a Class II recall, which signals that the products could cause “temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.” In plain terms, the risk is not considered severe, but it is serious enough to warrant immediate action.
Health officials are urging customers to stop using the products right away and verify purchases against the FDA’s official recall list. The impacted items include Dry Eye Relief Eye Drops, Artificial Tears Sterile Lubricant Eye Drops, Sterile Eye Drops Original Formula, and several other variations.
This situation also occurs during a stretch of increased scrutiny around eye care products. Earlier recalls in recent years involved contamination concerns and even reports of glass-like particles. So while this latest recall may not rank as the most severe, it keeps pressure on an industry already under the microscope.
