The Swatch x Audemars Piguet Collab Is Not Actually a Wristwatch — See the Pocket Timepiece That Sent Luxury Collectors into a Frenzy

AP x Swatch Watches Had People Camping Outside for Days -- Now They’re Reselling Online for $21,000

A flood of AI-generated fakes forced Swatch’s hand. After social media erupted with fabricated concept images following the brand’s May 8 collaboration announcement with luxury watchmaker Audemars Piguet, Swatch moved up its reveal ahead of the originally teased May 16 date. The result is the Royal Pop Collection — not the wristwatch many had dreamed up online, but a vibrant lineup of pocket watches drawing from two iconic design legacies.

Described by the brand as “a groundbreaking union of Audemars Piguet’s iconic Royal Oak and Swatch’s POP watches from the 1980s,” the Royal Pop merges AP’s octagonal bezel, eight-screw case, and signature Petite Tapisserie dial pattern with Swatch’s colorful, playful spirit. Swatch says “this collection will change the way we wear watches,” noting the pieces “break free from the wrist … allowing you to wear the watch in unexpected, playful, and dynamic ways.”

Eight models — each named after a variation of the word “eight” across different languages, including French, Japanese, Chinese, and Swiss Romansh — are offered in two configurations: the Lépine (crown at 12 o’clock, $400) and the Savonnette (crown at 3 o’clock, $420), the latter featuring a small seconds subdial.

Powering each watch is a reworked version of Swatch’s automated Sistem51 movement, rebuilt here as a hand-wound caliber boasting a 90-hour power reserve. The 8.4mm-thick case measures 40mm alone and 44.2mm by 53.2mm when clipped into its bioceramic holder.

Sales begin May 16 at 200 Swatch stores worldwide, with purchases limited to one piece per person per store per day — conditions likely to fuel queues reminiscent of the brand’s blockbuster 2022 Omega MoonSwatch launch.
