A Pasadena hotel pool incident is drawing attention after a mother shared her account on Facebook.
Carle, a software developer and single mother, wrote that on June 11 a white man approached her and her five year old daughter at the pool at the Westin Hotel in Pasadena, California, and asked whether the two had showered first. She said he told her people carry diseases into pools and he did not want the health department to shut it down.
In her post, Carle wrote that the man approached them again minutes later at the other end of the pool, claiming he worked for the health department. She said no hotel security or staff were nearby. She said she confronted him about what she saw as racism, and wrote that being black is not a disease.
According to Carle, other guests came to her defense. She said that when the hotel’s general manager got involved, the man was allowed to go without consequence, and that it was only after several white guests in a nearby jacuzzi, who she said the man never questioned about hygiene, spoke up that the manager agreed to review video to identify him.
Carle said she and her family checked out afterward. The hotel released a statement condemning the man’s comments. The man has not been publicly identified, and his side of the story has not been reported.
