Verzuz kicked off as a spontaneous Instagram Live session between Swizz Beatz and Timbaland during the early days of the pandemic. What began as two legendary producers trading hits turned into a must-watch cultural event. But when Verzuz was sold to Triller in 2021, some fans felt betrayed. Questions about ownership and intentions have lingered ever since.

On a recent livestream with engineer Young Guru and 19Keys, Swizz Beatz addressed those criticisms head-on. When a viewer accused them of selling out, Swizz didn’t hesitate to fire back.

“We ain’t sell out, we sold in,” he said. “I ain’t never sold out a day in my life…Sold out for what? It ain’t enough money to sell out…We sold into a idea. Verzuz didn’t have a valuation because we gave it to the people for free…These are well-thought-out plans, not freestyles.”

Swizz also admitted they could’ve kept fans better informed.

“I don’t expect people to understand what we doing,” he added. “That is the only thing I could have critique, we could have communicated it to the people better.”

Despite slower activity, Verzuz is still in the hands of its creators, and the next chapter is on the horizon, according to the producers.
