On February 20, 2026, the Supreme Court ruled that the sweeping tariffs Trump imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act were unlawful. American businesses are now being refunded billions of dollars in tariffs they paid.
Consumers are not getting a dime of it.
That is the mechanism, and it is worth understanding before anything else. A tariff is a tax paid at the border by the company importing the goods. That company passes the cost forward into the price you pay at the register. So when a court says the tariff was illegal, the refund goes back to the party who wrote the check to the government, which is the importer. Not the shopper who absorbed it downstream.
Meanwhile, the check Trump promised you has not moved.
He announced it on Truth Social on November 9, writing that a dividend of at least $2,000 a person, not including high income people, would be paid to everyone. On November 17 he said it would go to individuals of moderate income sometime before the 2026 midterms. At a December cabinet meeting he called the idea that it might not happen a Democrat scam. In January he said the checks would come toward the end of the year.
In a more recent interview with the New York Times, the timeline moved again, to later in 2026. No specific date was given.
There is no bill. National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett said in December that the checks would likely require legislation passed by Congress and signed by the president, and that he expected the administration to bring a proposal forward in the new year. He also said he expected the Supreme Court to rule in the administration’s favor and called required refunds pretty unlikely.
The Court ruled the other way, and the refunds are happening.
Now the math, because this is the part that gets lost.
The Senate Joint Economic Committee found that heightened tariffs cost the average American household an extra $1,725 on goods between February 2025 and January 2026. A separate set of tariffs that took effect July 24 could add roughly $1,100 more over the following year, according to Yale’s Budget Lab. The Committee’s minority estimate puts the total cost closer to $2,500 per household for 2026 alone.
So a $2,000 check is not a bonus. Even in the best case where it actually arrives, it is a partial refund of money already taken out of your pocket through higher prices, and depending on which estimate you use, it does not fully cover what you already paid.
There is also a question of whether the money exists. Trump has said tariff revenue could be so great that the government could stop collecting income taxes altogether. The Tax Foundation, a nonpartisan group, projects the tariffs will raise $2.1 trillion over the next decade, dropping to $1.6 trillion once foreign retaliation and other economic effects are accounted for. Sending $2,000 to most of the country costs hundreds of billions in a single year. And that projection was made before the Supreme Court invalidated a chunk of the tariff authority and triggered refunds.
The administration has shown it can move fast when it wants to. On December 18, Trump announced $1,776 checks called Warrior dividends for the nation’s 1.45 million service members, delivered before Christmas. The Pentagon funded those. That happened in weeks.
The tariff dividend has been discussed since July 2025. It has been promised for mid 2026, then before the midterms, then the end of the year, then later in 2026. Congress has never voted on it.
So where does that leave you. The tariffs raised your prices. A court said a big piece of them was illegal. The refunds are going to companies. And the check you were promised is still a Truth Social post.
