Tasia Fortune’s death investigation is facing growing scrutiny after her mother publicly rejected the possibility that the 29-year-old mother of four took her own life. According to ABC News, Fortune was found hanging from a tree behind a vacant property in Jackson, Mississippi, on August 3, and authorities have not yet announced her official cause or manner of death. Her family is now making clear that they want a thorough explanation of what happened.

According to the Mississippi Free Press, the Jackson Police Department initially announced that officers had located the body of an unidentified Black woman in the 500 block of Road of Remembrance shortly after 9 p.m. Neighbors had contacted authorities after the discovery. The Hinds County Coroner’s Office later identified the woman as Fortune. The outlet reported that authorities had not publicly said whether they suspected foul play, leaving some of the most important questions surrounding her passing unanswered.Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey, described the loss in deeply personal terms during an interview with ABC News. “This has just devastated us,” Spivey said. “Tasia was strong-minded, she was full of laughs and love, she had faith in God…he had so little and gave so much.” ABC News reported that Fortune had been living in Mississippi for more than a decade and was raising four children.
Spivey told ABC News that she last saw her daughter on July 26 when Fortune traveled to Kentucky for a family reunion. Asked about her daughter’s emotional state at the time, Spivey said, “She was better than I had seen her in a long time. She was at peace.” When asked directly whether she believed Fortune could have died by suicide, Spivey responded, “She did not do this to herself. I know my daughter and she did not do this to herself.” Her statement represents the family’s belief and not an official determination in the investigation.
The medical findings remain critical. A spokesperson for the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that an autopsy is being conducted to determine Fortune’s cause and manner of death. Jackson police also described the matter to ABC News as “an active death investigation.” As of the latest public reporting, officials have not announced an autopsy result or classified Fortune’s death as a homicide or suicide. Those unanswered medical questions mean speculation surrounding her death should not be presented as established fact.
Another development has added attention to the investigation. According to WLBT, detectives told a Jackson Municipal Court that they had interviewed Terence Anderson in connection with Fortune’s death. The station reported that Anderson lives in the same block where Fortune was discovered. WLBT said Anderson denied involvement in her death but acknowledged that he had argued with Fortune. Police reportedly said the two had been in a relationship, while Anderson denied that claim.
That distinction matters in coverage of the death. Per WLBT, Anderson was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and received a $250,000 bond, but the firearm case is separate from Fortune’s death. The station reported that Anderson has not been charged in connection with her death. Authorities have therefore not publicly established that he caused Fortune’s death, and his unrelated arrest should not be treated as proof of criminal responsibility in her case.
Calls for outside assistance have also intensified. The City of Jackson currently lists Kenneth Stokes as the council member representing Ward 3, and it has been reported that Stokes sent a letter asking U.S. Attorney Baxter Kruger’s office for help with the investigation.
The letter, which was obtained by ABC News, stated, “We are in dire need of the assistance of the U.S. Attorney’s Office with the death of an unidentified female discovered hanging in the backyard of an abandoned house on the Road of Remembrance in Jackson, Mississippi.” Fortune had not yet been publicly identified when the request was written. ABC News reported that Kruger’s office had not responded to its request asking whether federal authorities were investigating the woman’s death.
The circumstances have also carried particular historical weight for Black residents watching the case. The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum states that more than 500 men and women were lynched in Mississippi between 1882 and 1970. The Equal Justice Initiative has separately documented Mississippi among the states with the highest numbers and rates of racial terror lynchings during the nation’s lynching era. That history helps explain the fear and public sensitivity surrounding the discovery of a Black woman hanging from a tree, but historical context alone does not establish that Fortune was the victim of a lynching or racially motivated violence.
Her death also comes less than a year after another Mississippi hanging generated widespread questions. According to the Mississippi Free Press, 18-year-old Delta State University student Trey Reed was found hanging from a tree on campus in September 2025. Authorities ultimately ruled Reed’s death a suicide, although his family continued seeking answers and pursued an independent autopsy. The cases are separate, and there is no evidence publicly connecting them. Their similarities in circumstance, however, have contributed to broader community anxiety surrounding investigations of this nature in Mississippi.
For Fortune’s family, the immediate issue remains much more personal than the national conversation developing around her death.
