A 34 year old Uber driver died after being stabbed in the Chicago suburb of Lincolnwood, Illinois, and a 16 year old girl has been charged with murder, according to ABC7 Chicago and other local reports.
Police say the attack happened around 3 a.m. on Tuesday. Prosecutors say the girl took a knife and a machete from a Walmart in Skokie before getting into the car of Grant, an Uber driver from Wilmette. They say it was her third Uber ride of the morning. Authorities say she attacked him from the back seat. Grant got out and ran to a nearby condo building for help, and he was taken to a hospital, where he died.
Police say the girl got into the driver’s seat and drove off, but she hit a median and kept going on foot. Officers found her hiding with the weapons and used a Taser after she did not drop them when told to.
On Wednesday she was charged as an adult with first degree murder, and a judge denied bond. Her name is not included here because of her age. The charge is an allegation and she had not been convicted at the time.
Uber said in a statement, “We are heartbroken by the loss of one of our partners, Grant.” The company said it was working with police. Reports also noted it was the first homicide in Lincolnwood since 2006.
